If some uses the word sauce in Japan they often mean the vegetable and fruit sauce from BullDog. The BullDog sauce was first introduced in the 50's (Tonkatsu) and a second type (Semi-Sweet) was launched in the 60's.
Since then, sauce was served with many fried dishes.
